Russell Brand faces being blacklisted by the American media after causing outrage with a string of offensive jokes at the live MTV Video Music Awards. He has certainly gained the recognition he desired, although I don’t think it left American’s with a positive perception. Russell’s whole line of jokes revolved around politics and poked fun at young Hollywood. By the end of the night, Russell Brand had called President George Bush a ‘retard’, Britney Spears ‘the female Christ,’ and teased the Jonas Brothers about their purity rings. Brand opened the VMA’s with a political monologue, urging us to vote for Obama.
“Please, America, elect Barack Obama. On behalf of the world. Some people, I think they’re called racists, say America is not ready for a black president. But I know America to be a forward-thinking country because otherwise why would you have let that retard and cowboy fella be president for eight years?’ Adding, ‘We thought it was nice of you to let him have a go, because in England he wouldn’t be trusted with a pair of scissors.”It is too soon to see if Russell Brand’s offensive jokes will damage his career he is getting mixed reviews.
The LA Times wrote: 'The 2008 VMAs were poised to mark the return of Britney Spears. Instead, they will go down in history as the night when that English guy from Forgetting Sarah Marshall almost made the Jonas Brothers cry.'
But the New York Times were more appreciative of Brand’s turn, saying the “manic, intelligent English comedian, injected the show with politics (pro-Barack Obama), raunch and philosophical musings'
While, the Chicago Tribune wrote that 'Nobody quite knew what to make of the opening monologue of wild-haired host Russell Brand'.
MTV’s online message boards are filled with negative comments today. Do you feel Russell's comments were funny or tasteless?

Who gives a frog's fat ass what this guy's opinion is..who is he anyway? Yeah, like I would take political advice from a person who looks and acts like that. Even more reasons to skip these ridiculous award shows..glad I missed it.
^ because I was watching Entourage...much better TV than MTV awards show.
omg it was one of the worse vma's EVER!!! what were they thinking chosing that guy to host the mtv music award. he wasnt funny at all and he even try. you can tell he felt awkward by the way he walked off the stage after his monologue. nobody in the audience laughed or showed any interest in him.
dont ever make fun of our president when you're from another country. only americans are allow to make fun of their own presidents.
the performances were kinda sucked too. lil wayne? i expected alot more and they ruined it putting leona lewis in there. wtf was that all about? ruined a perfectly good rap song! he needed to pull up his pants and put on a shirt! his boxer briefs were showing and we wonder why our children are so messed up....following these dumbass rappers who never made it pass high school.
I completey agree with ^^. That show suuuuucked. Who ever was in charge of this years line up, performers, layout ect. should be fired. I use to like the VMAs. Now they're not worth watching. Oh and Russell Brand...He needed (or still needs) to be taken out back and get a boot up his ass, it's the AMERICAN WAY. Gee, I had no idea that the VMAs are a plug for Obama. How interesting. I was waiting for boos to come from the artists on this idiots insults but nope. They where either too drunk or didn't care. Just like me after the fist 15 minutes of that show.
I think he's Amy Whinehouses long lost brother. If the insanity fits, which it does for him, there's medication for that! He sucked!
I agree that guy sucked! It was not entertaining at all. Bad choice by MTV.
