Nicole Richie didn’t just beat rival Christina Aguilera to the delivery room by having daughter Harlow on Jan. 11, one day before Aguilera gave birth to son Max, but it appears Richie will beat Aguilera on the newsstand as well.
Both new moms each had their own cover of People magazine, and according to some early estimates, the issue featuring Richie is on target to sell more than 1.8 million copies, according to an industry source, whereas Aguilera’s has sold far less. People magazine could not confirm sales numbers; a spokesperson said its too soon to know how many copies were sold.
Why does there seem to be more interest in Harlow Winter Kate Madden? One magazine insider said part of it could come down to the moms’ fan bases. “Christina historically doesn’t do that well on covers,” said the source, who cites poor sales of her wedding photo issue in OK!, and less-than-stellar sales of her nude photo shoot in the January 2008 Marie Claire.
That might be true, but Nicole Richie doesn’t seem like an obvious home run on the cover, either. “There’s also a greater element of curiosity with Nicole,” the source conceded. “She’s gone public about being a heroin addict. Her boyfriend is covered in tattoos. By default, she’s got the more interesting baby. People want to see how she settles down. They want to see what kind of baby someone with her background has.”

Christina Aguilera seems be taking tips from her newborn baby, reportedly throwing a “massive tantrum” and sacking her manager, an assistant and PR firm BWR. And all because an issue of People Magazine, featuring pictures of the busty singer with husband Jordon Bratman and five-week-old son Max Liron, received poor sales.
The mag is said to have paid $750,000 for pictures of the family, but the issue featuring the snaps is believed to have sold just 1.3 million copies, about 100,000 less than usual.
A source said: “She went crazy and had a massive tantrum. It was astonishing. She was absolutely furious and blamed her staff for the way everything had been handled.
“She decided BWR had to go, then gave her day-to-day manager and one of her assistants their marching orders too.”.
It doesn’t help that Jennifer Lopez and husband Marc Anthony are said to have agreed a $3million deal with People for exclusive pictures of their twins, who were born on Friday. The magazine will also reveal the names the couple have chosen for their children.

This week’s People Magazine cover subject Christina Aguilera is happy to chat about motherhood – every aspect of her new role, in fact. During an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show scheduled to air Wednesday, the talk-show host playfully asks the pop star – who sported a low-cut shirt – “You look great. One question: Are you nursing?”
A blushing Aguilera responded: “I guess it’s a little obvious,” and DeGeneres quipped back, “It’s going to be a healthy baby boy.” ( Watch the clip here.)
Aguilera, 27, did not demure when talked turned to her son’s Bris. “We are not a very conservative couple,” she told DeGeneres. “For decorations we put up penis balloons all over the place. It was really fun, it was really great.” A stunned Ellen replied: “Really, they have penis balloons in a shop … you can just buy them?”

She was accused of being too posh to push, like many a celebrity mother before her. But Christina Aguilera has revealed the real reason why she had her son by Max by Caesarean section. The singer admitted that she was terrified of giving birth naturally. Miss Aguilera told Hello! magazine: “I’d heard horror stories about tearing. I really wanted a calm and peaceful environment. I didn’t want any surprises.”
The 27-year-old is not alone in her fears. An estimated one in 14 prospective mothers is afraid of giving birth.
Another study has found that almost half of women having an elective caesarean are so terrified of childbirth that it affects their health. Max was conceived during the U.S. leg of Miss Aguilera’s 2007 world tour, and was born last month. She and husband Jordan Bratman married in 2005.
Despite his wife’s sensitivities over giving birth, Bratman had no such qualms. Miss Aguilera recalled: “Jordan wasn’t squeamish at all. He had the video camera ready to go.” She added: “The most reassuring thing for me was hearing that first beautiful cry. I just welled up with tears. “We can’t stop staring at him. We study him, he studies us back. It’s just an unbelievable experience, the whole journey. It’s just a beautiful time in our lives.”
The couple revealed in the interview that Max underwent a bris - a Hebrew baby naming and circumcision ceremony - because Bratman is Jewish. Miss Aguilera also said she would consider adopting to expand her new family, as Angelina Jolie has done. Hello! magazine is on sale on Tuesday.

“I’m enjoying him every second,” she says of her son. “I can’t stop staring at him, studying him. You can’t believe you created this. Me and my husband couldn’t be happier.”
“You think you’ve accomplished all these amazing things until you have your first born or even your second born and it’s like, ‘You can’t believe what you’ve done, what you’re capable of doing,’” she says. “I have to say throughout the pregnancy I was never more appreciative of what the female body is capable of doing until the whole thing happens and you’re like, ‘Oh my God I did this.’”

Don’t expect to see a photo of Christina Aguilera’s baby on the cover of any magazines this week. Sources say that after months of negotiating, a deal between Aguilera and OK! magazine came to a halt because the magazine couldn’t guarantee a full-cover photo of Aguilera and baby boy, Max.
An industry source added, “Christina has an inflated sense of her own value and seems to expect an extortionate amount of money for these baby pictures. I’m not sure OK! or much of the industry thinks is a dollar figure that’s worth it. … She hasn’t proven to be a real seller.”
According to a person familiar with Aguilera’s contract, the terms include a promise that a magazine that buys the Aguilera baby photos may not run photos of Nicole Richie’s new baby. “Christina can’t stand Nicole,” said a source who knows Aguilera. “Nothing would make her more upset than to see those two babies on the same cover, even if it wasn’t at the same time.”

Christina is reportedly at the hospital today giving birth to her first child. According to E! Online:
Word on the street is that Christina Aguilera is already at Cedars awaiting a very special delivery—and we’re not talking ’bout the Domino’s kind. She has allegedly been there since last night, but when Planet Gossip’s Marc Malkin checked in this morning, her rep said there was nothing to announce…yet.
I’ll take the high road on this one and wish Christina the best of luck! Hopefully they supply her with many a painkiller and everything goes as smooth as possible.
